Iran says it has launched coordinated missile and drone attacks on several United States military facilities across the Middle East in retaliation for renewed US airstrikes on southern Iran, marking a major escalation in the ongoing confrontation between the two countries.
According to statements issued by Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and the Iranian Army on Sunday, the retaliatory operation targeted US military installations in Jordan, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain and Oman.
The IRGC claimed ballistic missiles struck the US-operated Prince Hassan Air Base in Jordan during the first phase of the operation. It also said missiles later hit Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar, alleging damage to aircraft maintenance facilities and command-and-control centers. In Oman, Iran claimed to have attacked logistical facilities supporting US naval operations at the Port of Duqm.
Separately, the Iranian Army said it launched waves of drones against US military positions in Kuwait and Bahrain, claiming to have targeted air defense systems, radar installations, communications facilities and ammunition depots.
Iran also alleged that its navy intercepted US naval movements near the Strait of Hormuz before the latest American airstrikes, and warned that any further US military action would trigger an even stronger response.
The retaliatory strikes came after the United States reportedly carried out fresh attacks on military-related targets in southern Iran. US Central Command (CENTCOM) said the strikes were intended to reduce Iran's ability to control the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic global oil shipping route.
Iran had earlier announced the closure of the Strait of Hormuz "until further notice," saying the move would remain in effect until the United States ends its military intervention in the region.
As of the time of reporting, there has been no independent verification of Iran's claims regarding the extent of damage to US military facilities, and US authorities have not publicly confirmed the reported Iranian strikes or casualties.
The situation remains fluid as tensions continue to rise across the Gulf region.
