Senator Austin Akobundu, who represents Abia Central Senatorial District, has pledged that no child in the district should be forced to abandon education because of financial hardship.
Speaking during the presentation of scholarships to 114 students from Abia Central studying in tertiary institutions, Akobundu said education remains the strongest tool for securing a better future. Each beneficiary received ₦200,000 to support their education.
The senator also presented a cheque worth ₦7.2 million to the National Teachers' Institute (NTI), Oboro Study Centre, to cover the tuition fees of students enrolled under his scholarship programme.
According to Akobundu, the initiative is an investment in the future of young people and part of his commitment to promoting human capital development across the district.
He urged the scholarship recipients to remain focused on their studies and avoid examination malpractice, cultism, drug abuse, prostitution, truancy and other social vices, assuring them that the scholarship scheme would continue.
Akobundu also encouraged fellow lawmakers, politicians and other stakeholders to prioritise education in their empowerment programmes, describing it as the most sustainable way to improve society.
His legislative aide, Stanley Nwabuisi, said the programme was designed to support indigent students and help them pursue higher education.
Several education stakeholders commended the senator for his continued investment in education and youth development, while one of the beneficiaries, Ezenwa Godswill, a Medicine and Surgery student at Abia State University, expressed gratitude and promised that the students would remain committed to their academic pursuits.
