The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has outlined the process for registered voters who relocate and wish to vote from a new location.
According to INEC, registered voters are expected to register at the polling unit closest to where they live. If a voter moves to a different area outside their original polling unit, they must transfer their voter registration before they can vote at their new location.
Who Is Eligible?
Any registered voter who has relocated outside the polling unit where they originally registered is eligible to apply for a voter transfer.
Two Ways to Transfer Your Registration
1. Online Transfer Voters can apply online through the INEC Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) portal by:
Creating or signing into an account.
Verifying their identity using facial recognition.
Selecting a new polling unit.
Submitting the transfer request and waiting for approval.
Receiving updates on the application via email.
2. In-Person Transfer Voters may also visit the nearest INEC registration centre in their new place of residence and:
Submit a written application through the Electoral Officer.
Attach a photocopy of their Permanent Voter's Card (PVC).
Provide their current address and contact details.
Present proof of residence if requested by INEC.
Important Information
INEC advises that transfer requests must be submitted at least 90 days before an election, as no transfers will be approved within 90 days of election day.
Once approved, the voter's details will be removed from the previous polling unit and transferred to the new one. If a new PVC is issued, it must be collected in person at the new location, as collection by proxy is not allowed.
The Commission encourages eligible voters who have relocated to complete their transfer early to ensure they are able to participate in future elections.
