A 41-year-old herder, Musa Lawal, reportedly collapsed after 42 of his cows died suddenly in Koroko community, Kwali Area Council of Nigeria's Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
According to the FCT Treasurer of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN), Yahuza Ibrahim, the incident occurred on Tuesday evening after the cattle were taken out to graze by two of the herder's sons. The animals were later found dead in different parts of the grazing area.
Association officials suspect the cows may have consumed grass contaminated with agricultural chemicals, although the exact cause has not yet been confirmed.
Lawal reportedly rushed to the scene after receiving news of the incident but collapsed upon discovering the scale of the loss. He was taken to the General Hospital in Kwali, where he received treatment and was discharged the following day after recovering.
Kwali Area Council Chairman, Hon. Nuhu Daniel Kwali, visited the affected family alongside Fulani community leaders to express sympathy over the incident.
The council has directed security agencies, including the Department of State Services (DSS), to investigate the cause of the deaths. Authorities also said they are considering measures to support the herder and prevent any tension between farming and herding communities in the area.
The investigation into the incident is ongoing.
