The Palestinian group Hamas has officially dissolved the governing body that administered the Gaza Strip for nearly two decades, paving the way for a new technocratic administration to oversee civilian affairs.
The announcement marks a major political shift for Hamas, which has governed Gaza since taking control of the territory in 2007 after winning the 2006 Palestinian legislative elections.
According to Hamas, the head of its emergency government committee, Mohammed al-Farra, submitted his resignation and dissolved the committee to facilitate the transfer of administrative responsibilities to the National Committee for the Administration of Gaza (NCAG).
Hamas spokesperson Hazem Qassem said the decision demonstrates the group's willingness to step away from governing Gaza in order to support a political transition and remove obstacles to ending the conflict.
The NCAG, headed by Palestinian technocrat Ali Shaath, was established following the October 2025 ceasefire brokered between Hamas and Israel. However, the committee has yet to assume control inside Gaza due to ongoing disagreements over its deployment.
Hamas said it has informed other Palestinian factions of the decision during recent talks in Cairo, where the move was reportedly welcomed as a positive step toward establishing a unified civilian administration.
Despite the transition, major issues remain unresolved, particularly Hamas's military wing and the future security arrangement in Gaza. Negotiations over the second phase of the ceasefire have stalled, with Hamas insisting that a recognized Palestinian administration be established before discussing the transfer of its weapons.
Meanwhile, Israeli forces continue to maintain and expand their presence across large parts of Gaza, while Israel has reiterated its opposition to both Hamas returning to power and an immediate takeover by the Palestinian Authority.
The future governance of Gaza remains one of the key issues in ongoing ceasefire and post-war negotiations.
