Families of 176 people kidnapped by armed terrorists in Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State have appealed to the Federal Government and the Kwara State Government to urgently rescue their loved ones, who have remained in captivity for nearly six months.
According to relatives of the victims, the kidnappers allegedly threatened to force the "most beautiful" female captives into marriage while killing the remaining hostages if their demands are not met.
Speaking during an interview with BBC Hausa, Abdul Ibrahim, a resident of Kaiama, said the affected communities raised more than ₦155 million through community donations in an effort to secure the victims' release. However, he claimed the abductors rejected the ransom, leaving the captives in continued detention.
He said families have exhausted every available option, including peaceful protests, but have yet to receive the intervention they seek from the authorities.
Another community leader, Suleiman Bukata, urged the Federal Government and security agencies to replicate the recent rescue operation that freed kidnapped victims in Oyo State by launching similar efforts in Kaiama. He said the successful rescue in Oyo has renewed hope among families in Kwara, who believe their loved ones also deserve urgent attention.
Commenting on the broader security situation, Senator Adamu Aliero expressed concern over the persistent terrorist attacks across northern Nigeria. He said the National Assembly has consistently approved funding requests for security operations, arguing that the challenge lies in the complexity of the insurgency rather than inadequate funding.
The senator also renewed his call for the creation of state police, saying governors should be constitutionally empowered to establish local policing structures capable of responding more effectively to security threats within their states.
