A Guatemalan man who was deported from the United States and his wife, who recently returned to Guatemala to reunite with him, have been found dead in a sugarcane field, while their one-year-old daughter was discovered alive beside their bodies.
Authorities identified the victims as 43-year-old Nixon Giovanni Perez and his wife, Glendy Marisol Gonzalez. Their bodies were found with their hands tied behind their backs in Retalhuleu, southwestern Guatemala.
Police said Perez appeared to have suffered a gunshot wound to the neck, while Gonzalez sustained a head injury. Investigators recovered shell casings and other evidence at the scene. The couple's personal belongings were missing, and a motorcycle was seized for investigation.
The couple had reportedly gone missing last week. Their surviving daughter, along with their two other children, has been placed in the care of relatives.
Perez had been deported from the United States after being detained by immigration authorities in Missouri. Gonzalez later voluntarily returned to Guatemala to reunite with her husband despite having an asylum hearing scheduled in the U.S. next year.
Their deaths have renewed concerns over the safety of migrants returning to Guatemala, where authorities say organized crime has fueled a recent surge in violent killings.
According to United Nations data, nearly 32,000 people were deported to Guatemala during the first half of 2026, with more than 90 percent arriving from the United States.
Guatemalan authorities have launched a homicide investigation, while the government has announced new security measures aimed at tackling rising violent crime across the country.
