A High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in Maitama has ordered the remand of former Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) Chairman, Danladi Umar, at the Kuje Correctional Centre pending the hearing of his bail application.
Umar was arraigned by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on a four-count charge bordering on alleged abuse of office and conferring undue advantage on himself while serving as CCT chairman.
According to the prosecution, Umar allegedly received ₦5.5 million through his wife's bank account in 2021 from a contractor engaged to repaint the CCT headquarters in Abuja. He is also accused of collecting ₦6 million in January 2024 from another contractor responsible for digitising the tribunal's records.
The EFCC further alleged that the former tribunal chairman instructed a contractor to pay ₦2.43 million for his daughter's tuition at Baze University in Abuja.
Umar pleaded not guilty to all the charges.
Following arguments from both the prosecution and defence over his bail application, Justice Peter Kekemeke adjourned the case until July 15, 2026, to allow the prosecution respond to the bail request and ordered that Umar remain in custody at the Kuje Correctional Centre.
Danladi Umar previously presided over several high-profile cases during his tenure as CCT Chairman, including those involving former Senate President Bukola Saraki and former Chief Justice of Nigeria Walter Onnoghen.
