China has successfully tested a new sea-based rocket booster recovery system, marking a significant milestone in its efforts to develop reusable space launch technology.
According to Chinese state media, the Long March 10B rocket lifted off from the Hainan Commercial Space Launch Site on Friday and successfully delivered a satellite into its planned orbit. About six minutes after separating from the upper stage, the rocket's booster returned vertically and was recovered on an offshore platform using a large net.
The achievement is China's first successful recovery of an orbital-class rocket booster and is expected to reduce the cost of future space missions by allowing rocket components to be reused.
Unlike SpaceX's Falcon 9, which lands on deployable legs, the Long March 10B uses four landing hooks to catch a net mounted on a floating sea platform. Chinese engineers say the system reduces the rocket's weight, increases payload capacity, and improves recovery flexibility.
The successful test boosted shares of several Chinese aerospace companies, reflecting growing confidence in the country's commercial space industry.
China has been investing heavily in reusable rocket technology for nearly a decade as it seeks to expand satellite launches and support its ambitious lunar exploration programme. Officials say the recovered Long March 10B booster is expected to be reused for another mission before the end of the year.
The breakthrough brings China a step closer to competing with leading reusable rocket operators such as SpaceX and Blue Origin in the global space industry.
