Fear spread across the University of Jos (UNIJOS) community on Tuesday after the beheaded body of a middle-aged man was discovered on farmland within the university premises.
The victim, whose identity had not been officially confirmed at the time of reporting, was found with his head severed and missing. The discovery caused panic among students, staff, and nearby residents.
A student of the university said the body was found early Tuesday morning on a farm inside the university community, adding that the victim was neither a student nor a member of staff.
A senior university official, speaking anonymously, confirmed the incident and said preliminary findings suggest the deceased was a local farmer who regularly cultivated crops on the land. According to the official, the victim likely arrived at the farm early in the morning before being attacked.
The official noted that the circumstances surrounding the killing remain unclear, but the nature of the crime suggests the attackers deliberately targeted the victim and fled with his severed head.
The victim's family has been notified, and arrangements are underway to remove the body. The university management is expected to issue an official statement on the incident through its Information Directorate.
Efforts to obtain a response from the Plateau State Police Command were unsuccessful at the time of filing this report, as the command's spokesperson could not be reached.
Authorities are expected to launch an investigation to determine those responsible and the motive behind the killing.
