Bangladesh President Resigns Over Health Concerns.

Bangladesh President Mohammed Shahabuddin has resigned from office, citing deteriorating health as the reason for his decision.

The 76-year-old leader confirmed his resignation on Friday, ending speculation that he would step down before the expiration of his term in 2028. In his resignation letter addressed to the Speaker of Parliament, Shahabuddin said worsening physical and mental health had made it impossible for him to effectively perform the duties of the presidency.

"Due to worsening physical and mental incapacity, it is no longer possible for me to properly discharge the responsibilities of such an important constitutional office," the letter stated.

Shahabuddin, a close ally of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, was elected president by Parliament in 2023 with the backing of the Awami League. Although the presidency is largely ceremonial, he faced growing pressure to resign following Hasina's removal from power during a student-led uprising in 2024.

Earlier this year, Shahabuddin denied allegations that he held telephone conversations with Hasina while receiving medical treatment in London.

Before the resignation was officially confirmed, Bangladesh Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed had said the government had not received any formal notice from the president. Under the country's constitution, a president must submit a resignation letter to the Speaker of Parliament for the resignation to take effect.

The resignation marks a significant political development in Bangladesh as the country continues to navigate a changing political landscape following the departure of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
