An Adamawa State Magistrate Court has fined the African Democratic Congress (ADC) governorship candidate, Suleiman Umar, ₦3 million for illegally displaying campaign posters on public infrastructure.
The ruling followed the placement of campaign posters on flyovers and other government-owned structures, an act prohibited under state laws protecting public property.
Reacting to the court's decision, Governor Ahmadu Fintiri warned politicians against defacing public facilities with campaign materials, stressing that anyone who violates the law will face legal consequences.
The governor's Chief Press Secretary, Humwashi Wonosikou, said the enforcement is not politically motivated, noting that the law applies equally to all political parties and candidates.
According to him, public infrastructure such as flyovers, bridges, streetlights, road medians, and government buildings were built with taxpayers' money and should not be used as campaign advertising spaces.
He added that the recent court judgment demonstrates the government's commitment to protecting public assets and enforcing existing laws without fear or favour.
Wonosikou encouraged political parties and candidates to use approved billboards, designated advertising spaces, newspapers, radio, television, digital platforms, and town hall meetings for their campaigns instead of defacing public property.
However, observations in Yola, the Adamawa State capital, showed that campaign posters belonging to candidates of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) were also displayed on some public structures, raising concerns over equal enforcement of the law.
