A correspondent for Saudi Arabia’s television network in Yemen has been killed after a bomb planted in his car exploded, the broadcaster reported on Thursday.
The journalist, Mohammed Aydah, who also worked with Al Arabiya’s sister channel , was killed late Wednesday in Mukalla city, in Yemen’s eastern Hadramout province.
Authorities said no group has claimed responsibility for the attack. Al Arabiya reported that security officials had warned Aydah about a possible threat to his life about a month before the killing.
Yemen’s Presidential Leadership Council chairman, Rashad al-Alimi, ordered a high-level investigation and promised that those responsible would be pursued.
The attack happened amid ongoing political tensions in Yemen, where rival forces have been competing for influence. Mukalla had previously seen clashes between Saudi-backed government forces and UAE-backed separatists.
The Southern Transitional Council (STC) condemned the assassination and said it reflected wider security problems in Hadramout.
Yemen has been in conflict since 2014, when Houthi forces seized the capital, Sanaa, leading to a Saudi-led military intervention. The country remains one of the world’s most dangerous places for journalists.
