The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has launched a Climate Resilient Infrastructure for Basic Services (CRIBS II) project in Katsina State aimed at strengthening 24 primary healthcare centres and schools against the effects of climate change.
The project, supported by funding from the United Kingdom’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), is being implemented in four local government areas: Charanchi, Mai’adua, Mani, and Dutsi.
Speaking during the CRIBS II state-level launch meeting in Katsina, UNICEF Kano Field Office Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) Specialist Uba Lawal said the initiative would upgrade and rehabilitate facilities to better withstand climate-related challenges.
He explained that the first phase of the programme in Katsina would focus on the selected 24 schools and healthcare facilities in the four local government areas.
According to him, the project will help ensure that essential services, including education and healthcare, continue during climate emergencies such as floods, heatwaves, droughts, and windstorms.
The intervention will focus on improving water, sanitation, and hygiene facilities in schools and primary healthcare centres to make them more resilient to environmental risks.
Lawal noted that CRIBS had previously been implemented in Kano and Jigawa States, where 84 facilities benefited during the first phase — 55 in Kano and 29 in Jigawa.
He added that Katsina’s inclusion represents an expansion of the programme to reach more communities.
“This project is about rehabilitating water and sanitation facilities so schools can continue providing learning opportunities and healthcare centres can continue delivering essential services, even during climate emergencies,” Lawal said.
He added that contractors, supervisors, and government officials would work together to monitor implementation, with renovation plans displayed at participating facilities to promote transparency.
UNICEF stressed the importance of communities and governments adopting climate adaptation measures and innovative solutions to protect basic services from the growing impact of climate change.
