Three firefighters have been killed while responding to major wildfires along the Utah–Colorado border in the western United States, according to the US Wildland Fire Service.
The agency said the firefighters were working to control the Knowles and Gore fires when the incident occurred. Two other crew members were also injured during the response.
The fire service expressed condolences to the families of the victims, describing their deaths as a major loss to the firefighting community.
The incident comes during a severe wildfire season in the US, as hot temperatures, strong winds, and dry conditions continue to fuel fires across several western states.
Authorities said millions of acres of land have already been affected by wildfires this year, with dozens of active fires still classified as uncontrolled.
The governors of Utah and Colorado have declared states of emergency, allowing additional resources to be deployed. Utah officials also introduced restrictions on fireworks ahead of the July 4 holiday to reduce fire risks.
Officials warned that ongoing drought conditions are increasing the likelihood of more wildfires, while emergency teams continue efforts to contain the blazes.
