A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has granted the presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC) and publisher of Sahara Reporters, Omoyele Sowore, bail of ₦200 million.
Justice Mohammed Umar, in his ruling on Tuesday, ordered Sowore to provide two sureties. One of the sureties must be a traditional ruler from his community in Ese Odo Local Government Area of Ondo State, while the second must own landed property within the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
The court also directed that the sureties must be verified by the prosecution counsel, Akinlolu Kehinde, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN). Sowore was further ordered to submit his international passport to the deputy chief registrar of the court.
Sowore had been remanded at the Kuje Correctional Centre on June 16 after Justice Umar revoked his earlier bail granted on self-recognition in December.
The judge had issued a bench warrant for his arrest after he failed to appear in court for trial over allegations of cybercrime and criminal defamation.
The Department of State Services (DSS) is prosecuting Sowore over claims that he referred to President Bola Tinubu as a “criminal” in posts on his official X and Facebook accounts.
His lawyer, R.O. Adakole, appealed for his release to enable him retrieve his passport from the US embassy in Lagos.
Justice Umar later adjourned the case to July 6, 2026, for continuation of hearing.
