A Saudi-born doctor has been sentenced to life imprisonment in Germany after being convicted of killing six people and injuring hundreds in a car attack at a Christmas market in Magdeburg.
The court found that Taleb A., a psychiatrist originally from Saudi Arabia, deliberately drove a rented BMW into crowds at the market in December 2024, causing one of Germany’s deadliest recent attacks.
Judges ruled the case involved “exceptional gravity,” meaning he will likely not be eligible for parole after the usual 15-year minimum prison period.
Prosecutors said the attack lasted just over one minute and had been planned for several weeks. The victims included five women aged between 45 and 75 and a nine-year-old boy.
Authorities said the suspect had expressed anti-Islamic views and far-right sympathies before the attack. Investigators believe he acted alone and was motivated by personal frustrations, including disputes and complaints he had made.
During the trial, officials said the defendant showed signs of narcissistic personality disorder and displayed little remorse.
The attack sparked national debate in Germany over security, immigration and political extremism. The court proceedings involved many victims and families, with dozens of lawyers representing those affected.
