Kano Emir Sanusi Lamido Sanusi has said that former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai is facing very difficult bail conditions before he can be released from the custody of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC).
El-Rufai has remained in ICPC custody since February 19 over allegations of financial misconduct during his time as Kaduna governor between 2015 and 2023.
The ICPC later charged him before the Kaduna High Court on nine amended counts involving alleged fraud and abuse of office.
Speaking after an event, Sanusi said the conditions placed on El-Rufai’s release were extremely strict, claiming that authorities demanded that an emir and a senior government official stand as sureties before he could be granted bail.
Sanusi said: “They said an emir and a senior government worker must sign his bail.”
The former Central Bank of Nigeria governor also expressed concern about the social and cultural challenges facing northern Nigeria.
He said poverty had existed in the region for a long time, but people in the North had traditionally maintained their dignity and relied on faith despite economic difficulties.
Sanusi added that the major problem facing the North was not only poverty but also the weakening of cultural values and identity.
He said northerners once enjoyed greater acceptance and influence in national politics but that this has changed over time.
