Pope Leo on Sunday expressed solidarity with people in Venezuela affected by the devastating impact of twin earthquakes that struck the country earlier this week.
“I wish to express my closeness to the Venezuelan brothers and sisters affected by the recent earthquakes that caused many victims and injuries,” the Pope said in Spanish during the Angelus prayer at the Vatican.
The pontiff also praised rescue teams and all those helping Venezuelans recover from the disaster.
Before becoming Pope, Leo spent decades as a missionary and bishop in Peru, a Spanish-speaking country. He is expected to visit several South American nations later this year, including Peru, Argentina and Uruguay.
Meanwhile, the European Union announced emergency assistance worth €5 million ($5.9 million) for communities affected by the earthquake.
EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said the bloc had activated its Civil Protection Mechanism, with several member states sending search-and-rescue teams, firefighters and medical personnel.
She added that the EU’s Copernicus satellite system was being used to map damage and help direct aid to the worst-hit areas.
Authorities continue rescue and relief operations as Venezuela deals with the aftermath of the powerful earthquakes.
