The Nigerian Army has renewed its commitment to defending Nigeria’s sovereignty and protecting citizens as it marked its 163rd anniversary.
The Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, made the pledge on Sunday during the Nigerian Army Day Celebration 2026 interdenominational church service held in Abuja.
Represented by Maj. Gen. Maxwell Dangana, Oluyede said the anniversary provided an opportunity to reflect on the Army’s journey, celebrate achievements, honour fallen heroes, and strengthen its commitment to national defence.
He said the theme of this year’s celebration, “Protecting the Nation and Serving the People: A Way Forward for the Nigerian Army,” reflects the military’s constitutional duty to safeguard Nigerians and promote stability.
The Army chief stated that troops are continuing operations against terrorism, insurgency, banditry, kidnapping, oil theft, and other criminal activities across the country.
He noted that the Army has recorded significant achievements, including the neutralisation of criminal elements, dismantling of terrorist camps, rescue of hostages, and restoration of peace in affected communities.
Oluyede praised officers and soldiers for their courage, discipline, and professionalism, adding that cooperation with other security agencies has contributed to recent successes.
He also disclosed that the Army has increased recruitment following President Bola Tinubu’s directive to strengthen Nigeria’s security structure.
According to him, the new recruits will receive proper training, equipment, and professional development to improve the Army’s ability to tackle emerging security challenges.
The Chief of Army Staff paid tribute to soldiers who lost their lives in service, describing their sacrifices as a lasting inspiration.
He also appreciated wounded personnel, veterans, military families, and the Federal Government for their support.
Oluyede reaffirmed that the Nigerian Army would continue to uphold its values of loyalty, discipline, integrity, selfless service, and professionalism while working towards a safer Nigeria.
