Police to Clamp Down on Vehicles Without Number Plates Nationwide

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Olatunji Disu, has ordered a nationwide enforcement operation against vehicles operating without number plates, as well as those using concealed, altered, or defaced registration plates.

The directive was announced during the monthly strategic meeting of senior police officers at the Force Headquarters in Abuja. According to the IGP, the move is aimed at strengthening security, improving crime detection, and preventing criminals from exploiting anonymous vehicle movements.

Disu also announced the deployment of Deputy Inspectors-General of Police (DIGs) to Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones beginning June 15. The measure is intended to improve supervision, coordination, and accountability across police formations nationwide.

The police chief said the reform would bring strategic leadership closer to operational areas and enhance rapid responses to emerging security threats.

On the issue of insecurity, the IGP disclosed that security agencies are making progress in efforts to rescue the abducted schoolchildren and teachers in Oyo State. He assured Nigerians that the full operational capacity of the police, working alongside other security agencies, is being deployed to secure their safe return.

Highlighting recent achievements, Disu revealed that since the last strategic meeting, police operations have led to the rescue of 88 kidnapping victims, the arrest of 29 murder suspects, 65 armed robbery suspects, and 55 kidnapping suspects. He also stated that eight terrorism suspects and 42 cultism suspects were arrested.

Additionally, security operatives recovered 114 firearms, 843 rounds of ammunition, and 28 stolen vehicles during various operations across the country.

The IGP further cited a recent intelligence-led operation in the Federal Capital Territory, where five suspected kidnappers were arrested before carrying out planned attacks in Abuja. He described the success as evidence of improved intelligence gathering and proactive policing.

To strengthen security coordination, Disu directed Commissioners of Police to establish “Handshake Patrols” between neighboring states, improve intelligence sharing, and increase surveillance along major entry and exit routes to prevent criminals from exploiting jurisdictional boundaries.
