President Bola Tinubu has approved ₦10 billion for emergency Ebola preparedness and the establishment of a Presidential Task Force to strengthen Nigeria’s response to potential public health threats.
According to a statement from the Presidency, the new task force will coordinate national preparedness efforts following renewed Ebola outbreaks in parts of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Uganda.
The committee will be chaired by the Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, and will include key federal ministries, agencies, and representatives from state governments.
The funding is intended to boost the capacity of the National Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) and improve emergency response systems across the country.
Authorities say Nigeria is taking preventive action to reduce the risk of importation through international travel routes and border entry points.
Key measures approved include:
Enhanced screening of passengers at all international airports
Temperature checks and stricter monitoring of incoming travelers from high-risk countries
Activation of isolation and referral centres in Lagos and Abuja airports
Use of digital health declaration systems (QR-code based) before arrival
Increased sanitation of airport terminals and baggage handling areas
Possible regulation or restriction of flights from high-risk countries
The government also directed all states with international airports and major border corridors to submit preparedness plans and funding requirements for coordinated response efforts.
Officials say the task force will work with aviation, security, and diplomatic agencies to ensure early detection and containment of any suspected cases.
