North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has reaffirmed his country's commitment to strengthening its long-standing relationship with China, describing recent talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping as a historic step toward deeper cooperation.
In a congratulatory message sent to Xi to mark the 105th anniversary of the Chinese Communist Party, Kim said North Korea would continue to develop its friendship with China, calling the relationship an important asset for both nations.
Kim said the summit held in Pyongyang in early June strengthened mutual trust and reflected the two leaders' "unshakeable will" to expand bilateral ties. During the visit, both countries agreed on a broad plan to deepen cooperation in diplomacy, security, and other strategic areas.
Although North Korea has recently strengthened military ties with Russia, China remains its largest economic partner, accounting for nearly 98 percent of North Korea's foreign trade.
Meanwhile, South Korea and Ukraine are continuing discussions over the fate of North Korean soldiers captured during the war in Ukraine. According to South Korean officials, any North Korean prisoners of war who wish to settle in South Korea would be accepted under the country's constitutional policy.
