At least 18 travellers from Sokoto State have lost their lives in a tragic road accident along the Sokoto–Yauri highway in Kebbi State while returning home from Lagos, where they had travelled in search of better job opportunities.
The victims were among 20 passengers travelling in an 18-seater commercial bus when it reportedly collided head-on with a trailer at about 11:00 p.m. on Monday. Eighteen people died instantly, while two others survived with injuries.
A member of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Bello Muhammad, said rescue teams rushed to the scene after receiving reports of the crash.
According to him, the bodies were taken to the General Hospital in Yauri, where relatives identified them before they were released for burial. He added that some victims were buried in Yauri because their bodies were severely damaged, while others were taken back to their hometowns in Sokoto for Islamic burial rites.
Muhammad said the victims came from different communities across Sokoto State, including Kajiji Ward, Bingaje, Gudirriga, Yabo Local Government Area, and Gada Local Government Area. He also confirmed that one of the survivors was the bus conductor.
Another resident, Alhaji Shehu Jabo, who assisted in transporting the bodies, described the incident as heartbreaking, saying many of the victims were difficult to identify due to the severity of the crash. He alleged that the trailer veered into the lane of the commercial bus, causing the fatal collision.
The Chairman of Shagari Local Government Area, Barrister Maidawa Kajiji, confirmed the incident and expressed condolences to the families of the deceased, praying for strength and comfort during this difficult time.
