Israeli Strike Kills Senior Lebanese Army Officer as Border Tensions Escalate

A senior Lebanese army commander and two other soldiers were killed in an Israeli airstrike in southern Lebanon on Saturday, according to Lebanese military officials, amid renewed fighting and continued security tensions along the Israel-Lebanon border.

The strike targeted a military vehicle traveling near the Nabatieh region. The Israeli military later confirmed carrying out the attack, stating that the vehicle had entered an active combat zone without prior coordination and was considered a potential threat to troops operating in the area.

Lebanon's armed forces condemned the attack, describing it as another violation of Lebanese sovereignty and warning that such incidents undermine efforts to restore stability and secure a lasting ceasefire.

The incident comes as Israeli forces issued evacuation warnings for several villages in southern Lebanon, citing the presence of Hezbollah fighters and military infrastructure. Residents were urged to move north of the Zahrani River ahead of planned military operations.

Meanwhile, Hezbollah-linked drone activity continued along the border. The Israeli military reported intercepting one drone and tracking several others that crashed near troop deployment areas, with no casualties reported.

Separately, Lebanese health authorities said five people were killed in another Israeli strike in the town of Zebdine, including a woman and emergency responders affiliated with a local rescue organization.

The latest violence has also fueled political tensions between Lebanon and Iran. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi criticized comments by Lebanese President Joseph Aoun, who recently accused Tehran of using Lebanon as leverage in negotiations with the United States.

The developments highlight the fragile security situation despite recent ceasefire efforts aimed at reducing hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah.
