Canadian authorities have charged a former Air Canada captain after alleging that he flew commercial aircraft for nearly 17 years without holding the required top-level pilot licence.
Police in Ontario announced that 59-year-old Geoffrey Wall faces multiple charges, including fraud and the use of forged documents, following a four-month investigation.
Investigators claim Wall commanded more than 900 domestic and international flights between 2009 and 2025 while lacking an Airline Transport Pilot Licence (ATPL), the certification required for pilots serving as captains of commercial airliners. Although he reportedly possessed a valid commercial pilot licence, authorities allege he falsely presented credentials to both Air Canada and aviation regulators.
According to police, Wall has been charged with fraud, possession and use of forged documents, counterfeit trademark offences, and public mischief.
Law enforcement officials described the case as a serious breach of public trust, noting that hundreds of thousands of passengers travelled on flights he allegedly operated during the period under investigation.
Air Canada stated that passenger safety was not compromised, emphasizing that all pilots undergo rigorous training and competency evaluations every six months, as well as annual flight assessments. The airline said Wall consistently met or exceeded operational standards during those evaluations.
The carrier added that it immediately removed him from duty and reported the matter to Transport Canada after discovering concerns regarding his licensing status. An internal review reportedly found no evidence of similar cases among other pilots.
Aviation safety experts described the allegations as highly unusual. They noted that the primary concern is not necessarily the pilot’s flying ability, but the apparent failure of regulatory systems designed to verify licences and maintain oversight of commercial aviation personnel.
The case remains under investigation, and the allegations have yet to be tested in court.
