At least 12 people have been killed and nine others injured after unidentified gunmen opened fire in an informal settlement near Johannesburg, South Africa, police said on Wednesday.
According to authorities, more than 10 armed suspects arrived in a vehicle and launched the attack shortly after 11 p.m. on Tuesday at the Jumpers informal settlement in Cleveland, located about six kilometres east of Johannesburg's city centre.
Police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi said the attackers entered the settlement through different access points and indiscriminately shot at residents before fleeing the scene.
"Eight adult men and three adult women were declared dead at the scene, while another victim later died in hospital," she said.
A total of nine people sustained injuries and are receiving medical treatment.
South African police have launched a large-scale manhunt for the suspects, but no arrests have been made. Investigators say the motive behind the attack remains unclear.
South Africa continues to struggle with high levels of violent crime and gun-related incidents. The country records one of the highest murder rates globally, with more than 60 homicides reported daily on average.
Authorities have appealed to members of the public with information about the shooting to assist the ongoing investigation.
