FG Urges Nigerians to Embrace Voluntary Blood Donation

FG Urges Nigerians to Embrace Voluntary Blood Donation

The Federal Government has called on Nigerians to regularly participate in voluntary blood donation to help save lives across the country.

The appeal was made by the National Orientation Agency (NOA) during activities marking World Blood Donor Day 2026, observed annually on June 14 to recognize and appreciate voluntary blood donors.

Importance of blood donation

According to the agency, donated blood plays a critical role in:

Emergency treatment of accident victims

Safe childbirth and maternal care

Treatment of patients with sickle cell disease, cancer, and other chronic illnesses

Supporting surgeries and other medical procedures.

Officials emphasized that every unit of donated blood can save multiple lives.

Government appeal:

The NOA urged Nigerians to:

Volunteer regularly for blood donation

Maintain good nutrition and hydration before donating

Rely on trusted health information sources

Encourage family and friends to participate.

The agency also stressed that voluntary donation strengthens community health systems and promotes a culture of shared responsibility.

Key message.
Authorities described blood donation as a “life-saving act of solidarity,” noting that increased participation could help reduce shortages in hospitals and emergency centers across Nigeria.

The agency reaffirmed its commitment to raising awareness and encouraging more Nigerians to become regular voluntary blood donors.
