Eight people have been confirmed dead while 17 others sustained various injuries in a road crash along the Funtua–Katsina highway in Bakori Local Government Area of Katsina State.
The accident occurred at about 1:32 p.m. on Sunday at Layin Kukah, according to the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Katsina Sector Command.
The crash involved a Toyota Hiace commercial bus with registration number 14B 92 TR and an unregistered Bajaj tricycle. A total of 25 people were involved in the accident.
The FRSC said preliminary investigations showed that wrongful overtaking was the likely cause of the crash.
The command’s Public Education Officer, DRC Shamsudeen Babajo, said the rescue team arrived at the scene about 30 minutes after receiving the report and carried out rescue operations with the support of the Community Watch Corps.
The injured victims were taken to Bakori Comprehensive Hospital for treatment, while the bodies of those who died were later transferred to General Hospital, Funtua.
The FRSC urged motorists to avoid dangerous overtaking and obey traffic regulations to reduce road accidents.
