Former Vice President and African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has alleged that there is a fresh plan by unnamed political actors to prevent the ADC from participating in the 2027 general elections.
Atiku, in a statement released on Monday through his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu, claimed he received credible information that legal and political strategies were being coordinated to remove the party from the ballot.
He warned that any attempt to block the opposition party from contesting would pose a serious threat to Nigeria’s democracy.
According to him, the alleged move was part of a wider effort to weaken opposition groups and limit Nigerians’ freedom to choose their leaders.
“We are aware of their plans. While they attempt to create division within the opposition, their real target is the ADC because it represents a strong alternative,” Atiku stated.
He accused the ruling All Progressives Congress of trying to influence which opposition parties participate in elections, saying political competition should be decided by voters rather than through legal pressure or administrative actions.
Atiku also criticized what he described as the use of institutions, lawsuits and political pressure to target opposition figures.
He said the government should focus on addressing economic hardship, insecurity, inflation and unemployment instead of concentrating on political battles.
“The proper response to a growing political movement is not suppression but presenting better ideas to the electorate,” he said.
He urged the judiciary, Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), security agencies and civil society groups to protect the credibility of the electoral process.
The ADC has recently gained attention as opposition figures, including Atiku and former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi, work toward building a coalition ahead of the 2027 election.
The Presidency, APC and INEC had not responded to the allegations at the time of the report.
