At least 19 people have been killed and several others injured after gunmen attacked Kawel village in Mushere District of Bokkos Local Government Area of Plateau State.
Residents said the attack happened late Sunday night while people were asleep. According to witnesses, the attackers invaded the village around 11:40 p.m., shooting at residents and forcing many to flee for safety.
A resident of Bokkos, Malo Bitrus, said more than 19 people were killed during the attack.
Bokkos Youth Leader Christopher Luka confirmed the incident, saying information about the attack reached local leaders shortly after midnight.
He said security agencies were immediately contacted and moved towards the affected community.
Luka described the attack as unprovoked and called on security authorities to strengthen protection in vulnerable communities to prevent further violence.
The incident occurred less than five days after the killing of the District Head of Gwande in Bokkos, Saf Samuel Alaket, who was reportedly attacked while returning from a traditional council meeting.
Authorities are yet to release an official statement on the latest attack.
