The United Nations has raised alarm over a worsening food crisis in Nigeria, warning that about 35 million people may experience acute hunger between June and August 2026.
In a statement released on Friday, the UN Humanitarian Country Team said the country is approaching a critical “lean season,” with millions of households struggling to access enough food, particularly in northern Nigeria.
According to the UN, nearly one in every seven Nigerians is expected to face serious food insecurity during the period, making Nigeria one of the world’s largest hunger hotspots.
The organisation noted that communities in the North-East and North-West are expected to suffer the most, with an estimated 6.4 million children projected to become acutely malnourished this year.
The UN warned that if humanitarian assistance is delayed further, many families may be forced to skip meals, sell off valuable assets, or withdraw their children from school in order to survive.
Humanitarian agencies are now appealing for urgent international support to scale up emergency food and nutrition assistance across affected regions.
The 2026 Humanitarian Needs and Response Plan for Nigeria requires $516 million in funding, but the UN disclosed that only about $215 million — just over 40 percent — has been received as of May 2026.
The agency stressed that without immediate intervention, the humanitarian situation could deteriorate significantly in the coming months.
