The story of Uwais al-Qarni is among the most inspiring narrations in Islamic history.
Although he never physically met Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, his sincerity, humility, and devotion to his mother elevated his rank so greatly that the Prophet ﷺ spoke about him before he even arrived in Madinah.
This narration is recorded in Sahih Muslim and highlights several important lessons about faith, character, and hidden righteousness.
1. Uwais al-Qarni Was From the Best of the Tabi‘een.
The Tabi‘een were the generation after the Sahabah — Muslims who met the Companions of the Prophet ﷺ but did not meet the Prophet himself.
Despite never seeing the Prophet ﷺ, Uwais al-Qarni became one of the most honored believers because of his sincerity and obedience to Allah.
This teaches that closeness to Allah is not based on fame, wealth, tribe, or public recognition, but on:
Pure faith
Sincerity
Humility
Obedience
Good treatment of parent.
2. His Service to His Mother Was the Reason for His Great Status.
One of the most powerful parts of the narration is:
> “He has a mother, and he treats her kindly.”
This was specifically mentioned by the Prophet ﷺ as a defining quality of Uwais.
Scholars explain that Uwais desired greatly to travel and meet the Prophet ﷺ, but he stayed behind to care for his elderly mother.
Because he chose obedience to his mother over his personal desire, Allah elevated him tremendously.
The lesson here is profound:
Serving one’s parents is among the greatest acts of worship.
Hidden acts of kindness may raise a person higher than visible acts people praise.
Allah rewards sacrifices made for His sake.
Allah says in the Qur’an:
> “And your Lord has decreed that you worship none but Him, and that you be dutiful to your parents…”
This connection between worship of Allah and kindness to parents shows how important the matter is in Islam.
3. True Righteousness Can Be Hidden
Uwais al-Qarni was not famous among the people. He was unknown and lived a simple life in Yemen. Yet the Prophet ﷺ informed Umar ibn al-Khattab about him.
This teaches:
A person may be insignificant in the eyes of people but عظیم (great) with Allah.
Sincerity is more valuable than public attention.
Not every righteous person is a scholar, leader, or public speaker.
Many people seek recognition from creation, while the righteous seek acceptance from Allah alone.
4. The Strength of His Du‘a.
The Prophet ﷺ said:
> “If he swears by Allah, Allah would fulfill his oath.”
This means Uwais had such sincerity and closeness to Allah that his supplications were accepted.
Because of this, the Prophet ﷺ instructed Umar ibn al-Khattab to ask Uwais to make du‘a for him.
This demonstrates:
The virtue of righteous people
The acceptance of sincere du‘a
The humility of the Sahabah.
Imagine: Umar ibn al-Khattab — one of the greatest Companions — asking an unknown man from Yemen to pray for him.
That is true humility.
5. Humility of Umar ibn al-Khattab
When Umar met Uwais, he did not behave arrogantly despite being the leader of the Muslims.
Instead, he carefully asked:
Are you Uwais?
Are you from Murad and then Qaran?
Did you once have leprosy?
Is your mother alive?
After confirming the signs mentioned by the Prophet ﷺ, Umar requested:
> “Ask Allah to forgive me.”
This shows the humility of the righteous leaders of Islam. They recognized virtue wherever it existed.

Sometimes the people most beloved to Allah are the ones least noticed by society.
