The Federal Government has announced plans for the National Examinations Council to fully adopt computer-based examinations as part of reforms aimed at reducing examination malpractice and modernising Nigeria’s education system.
Minister of Education Tunji Alausa disclosed the development during NECO’s 25th anniversary celebration in Abuja, describing the transition as a major step toward improving the credibility and efficiency of public examinations.
According to the minister, the computer-based testing system will allow authorities to monitor candidates in real time, identify suspicious activities, and strengthen examination security nationwide.
Alausa said the reform reflects Nigeria’s commitment to aligning its educational assessment methods with global standards while promoting transparency and accountability in the sector.
He added that the government wants assessments to focus more on practical skills such as critical thinking, digital literacy, and problem-solving rather than rote memorisation.
NECO Registrar Dantani Wushishi stated that the council has expanded its operations to eight countries, a move he said demonstrates growing international recognition of NECO certificates.
Wushishi noted that NECO has introduced several digital reforms over the years, including electronic certificate verification systems, e-certificates, and data analytics platforms to improve examination management.
He also revealed that the council plans to intensify efforts against examination malpractice while expanding infrastructure and digital services across the country.
Education stakeholders at the anniversary event expressed optimism that computer-based examinations would improve transparency, speed up result processing, and reduce opportunities for fraud in Nigeria’s public assessment system.
