Former Kano State Deputy Governor, Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, has emerged as the governorship candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The announcement was made on Friday by the leader of the Kwankwasiyya movement and former Kano governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, following consultations within the party leadership.
Kwankwaso also confirmed that former Deputy Governor Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna would contest for the Kano Central Senatorial seat under the NDC platform.
According to him, the selections were based on merit, loyalty, fairness, and the need to strengthen unity within the movement.
“I am pleased to announce Comrade Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo as our party’s governorship candidate for Kano State. Dr Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna will also fly the party’s flag for Kano Central Senatorial District,” Kwankwaso stated.
He expressed confidence in the party’s chances in the next elections and called for a peaceful affirmation process.
Gwarzo previously served as deputy governor under Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf before political realignments within Kano politics led to his exit from office. He also held positions as Commissioner for State Affairs and Chairman of Gwarzo Local Government Area during earlier administrations.
Gawuna, who was the APC governorship candidate in the 2023 election, recently joined forces with Kwankwaso and the NDC after leaving the ruling party.
Political observers see the development as a major step in Kano’s shifting political landscape ahead of the 2027 polls.
