Iranian military officials say the country launched missile strikes against United States naval forces in the Strait of Hormuz after an alleged attack on an Iranian oil tanker in the Gulf of Oman.
According to Iranian state media, Tehran said its naval and missile units responded after US aircraft reportedly targeted an Iranian-flagged tanker near the strategic waterway.
Iranian authorities claimed the retaliatory strikes caused damage to US military units and forced them to withdraw from the area.
A senior Iranian military official stated that Iran’s armed forces remain on high alert and are prepared to respond to any threat against the country’s territorial waters and maritime routes.
The confrontation comes amid rising tensions between Washington and Tehran despite an earlier ceasefire announcement intended to reduce hostilities in the region.
Iranian lawmakers also condemned the reported attacks, describing them as violations of international law and warning that any further military action against Iran would trigger a strong response.
Meanwhile, the United States Central Command said its forces acted in self-defense after alleged attacks from Iranian missiles, drones, and small boats operating in the Strait of Hormuz.
The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most critical energy corridors, carrying a significant portion of global oil and natural gas exports. Escalating tensions in the area have already raised concerns over shipping security and global energy supplies.
Regional analysts warn that continued military confrontations in the Gulf could further destabilise international oil markets and heighten geopolitical uncertainty across the Middle East.
