Deadly Heatwave Grips South Asia as Temperatures Near 50°C, Experts Warn of Climate Crisis

A record-breaking heatwave is sweeping across South Asia, pushing temperatures in countries such as India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh far above seasonal norms and reaching dangerous levels in several regions.

In some areas, temperatures have climbed to between 45°C and 50°C, causing widespread disruption to daily life and raising concerns about public health and infrastructure strain.

At least 10 people have reportedly died in Pakistan due to heat-related complications, while India and Bangladesh have also recorded multiple fatalities linked to extreme heat conditions.

Meteorological experts say the current heatwave is unusually early, intense, and widespread compared to previous years. They attribute the conditions to a combination of high-pressure weather systems, weak pre-monsoon rainfall, and climate patterns such as El Niño, which can intensify global temperatures.

Scientists also warn that human-driven climate change is increasing the severity and frequency of extreme heat events across the region.

In India, the meteorological department has issued warnings for prolonged heatwave conditions across several states, including western and coastal regions, where temperatures have exceeded 46°C in some locations.

Pakistan’s cities, including Karachi, have also experienced record-breaking heat, with authorities urging residents to stay hydrated and avoid outdoor exposure during peak hours.

Bangladesh has similarly faced sustained high temperatures, with past records showing a growing number of extreme heat days in recent years.

Experts say the impact of the heatwave is not evenly distributed, with outdoor workers, low-income households, the elderly, and children facing the highest risk due to limited access to cooling and healthcare.

Governments across the region have introduced heat action plans, early warning systems, and public advisories, but analysts say these measures often fail to fully protect informal workers and vulnerable communities.

Climate researchers warn that such extreme heat events are likely to become more frequent and severe in the coming decades, unless significant global emissions reductions and local adaptation measures are implemented.

They emphasize that stronger urban planning, improved labour protections, and expanded health systems will be essential to reducing the human cost of rising temperatures.
