European leaders are being called on to improve coordinated border health measures following renewed concerns over Ebola outbreaks in parts of Africa.
The Prime Minister of Italy, Giorgia Meloni, has urged the European Union to adopt stricter and more unified border monitoring policies in response to the ongoing Ebola outbreak in Central and East Africa.
In a letter addressed to EU leaders, Meloni requested that the issue be included in the upcoming European Council meeting and also proposed an urgent virtual meeting of EU health ministers. She emphasized the need for stronger cooperation in managing both direct and indirect travel flows from affected regions, while respecting each country’s health authority.
The concern is linked to the recent outbreak of Ebola virus disease in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and neighboring Uganda. Health authorities have reported confirmed and suspected cases, prompting increased international monitoring.
According to the World Health Organization, the outbreak has resulted in multiple suspected and confirmed infections, with warnings that the actual spread may be wider than reported.
Italy has already activated enhanced screening and surveillance protocols for travelers arriving from the affected countries, and medical experts from Rome’s Spallanzani Hospital are expected to be deployed to assist response efforts on the ground.
Officials say the goal is to improve preparedness, strengthen cross-border health coordination, and reduce the risk of further international spread of the virus.
