At least eight people were reportedly killed on Saturday after heavily armed attackers stormed Abacheke community in Ohaji/Egbema Local Government Area of Imo State.
According to local sources, the assailants targeted a security checkpoint in the community, opening fire on security personnel and residents. The attack reportedly left several people dead, including at least one security operative.
Witnesses said the gunmen also set multiple houses ablaze during the assault, destroying about six buildings and forcing residents to flee for safety.
“It was a terrifying attack. The gunmen shot continuously and burned several houses. Many people have abandoned the area because they fear another strike,” a community resident said.
The motive behind the attack remains unclear. However, speculation has linked the incident to activities surrounding the Biafra Day observance and the sit-at-home directive often associated with pro-Biafra groups.
The attack has heightened tension across the community, with residents calling for increased security presence to prevent further violence.
As of the time of reporting, the Imo State Police Command had not issued an official statement on the incident. Authorities are yet to confirm the exact number of casualties or provide details on efforts to apprehend those responsible.
