The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has transferred former Nigerian Minister of Power, Eng. Sale Mamman, to the Kuje Correctional Centre in Abuja to begin serving a 75-year prison sentence following his conviction for large-scale financial crimes.
Mamman was handed over to prison authorities on Tuesday after being presented before Justice James Omotosho, who had earlier sentenced him on multiple charges related to money laundering and fraud.
The court found the former minister guilty on 12 counts involving the alleged diversion of about ₦33.8 billion linked to major federal power projects, including the Mambilla and Zungeru hydroelectric schemes.
Following the conviction, the court also issued a consequential order for the forfeiture of several properties traced to Mamman. EFCC counsel and Director of Public Prosecution of the Federation, Rotimi Oyedepo, confirmed that the order covered five newly identified assets.
During court proceedings, the judge noted that Mamman had reportedly left Abuja shortly after sentencing and travelled to Kaduna. A relative told the court that he had been ill and was taken away by taxi, though details of his whereabouts prior to his transfer were unclear.
Justice Omotosho stated that the prison sentence took immediate effect from the day of judgment and directed that enforcement proceedings commence without delay.
Mamman’s transfer marks the beginning of his custodial sentence, concluding a high-profile corruption case that has drawn significant national attention due to the scale of funds involved and the sensitivity of the power sector projects linked to the allegations.
