Chinese authorities have sentenced former defence ministers Wei Fenghe and Li Shangfu to suspended death penalties after convicting them on charges of corruption and abuse of power.
State-run media reported that both former military chiefs accepted huge bribes and used their positions to grant favours and influence appointments within the military establishment.
Li Shangfu, who disappeared from public view before being removed from office in 2023, had been under investigation for what Chinese authorities described as serious violations of political and organisational discipline. Wei Fenghe, his predecessor, was also expelled from the ruling Communist Party over similar allegations.
The sentencing forms part of President Xi Jinping’s sweeping anti-corruption campaign targeting senior officials in the People's Liberation Army and the Communist Party.
In recent years, several top military commanders and government officials have faced investigations, expulsions, or sudden removals as Beijing intensifies efforts to tighten discipline and reinforce party control over the armed forces.
