What to recite before sleeping in Islam.

What to recite before sleeping in Islam.

Before going to bed, Islam encourages Muslims to end the day by remembering Allah, seeking protection, and calming the heart. These recitations help bring peace, forgiveness, and safety during sleep.
There are several Sunnah (recommended) adhkār and Qur’anic recitations that bring protection, peace, and blessings.
Here are the most important ones:

1. Ayat al-Kursi (Qur’an 2:255).

Recite this verse once before sleeping.

The Prophet ﷺ said whoever recites it at night will have protection from Allah until morning.

2. Last two verses of Surah Al-Baqarah (2:285–286).

Reciting these at night is also highly recommended and brings sufficiency and protection.

3. Surah Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq, and An-Nas.

Recite each Surah 3 times, then:

Blow into your hands

Wipe over your body (head and front).

This was the practice of the Prophet ﷺ before sleeping.

4. Tasbeeh before sleep (Fatimah’s dhikr).

The Prophet ﷺ taught his daughter Fatimah:

SubhanAllah — 33 times

Alhamdulillah — 33 times

Allahu Akbar — 34 times.

5. Sleeping dua (very important Sunnah)

Say:

بِاسْمِكَ اللَّهُمَّ أَمُوتُ وَأَحْيَا

Bismika Allahumma amutu wa ahya
“In Your name, O Allah, I die and I live.”

6. Other Sunnah actions before sleep.

Sleep on your right side

Make wudu before sleeping

Shake your bed lightly (to remove harm)

Forgive others and clear your heart.
