Myanmar Frees Over 4,000 Prisoners in New Year Amnesty.

Authorities in Myanmar have released more than 4,000 prisoners under a mass amnesty to mark the country’s traditional New Year celebration.

State media reported that the country’s military leadership approved the pardon of 4,335 inmates, including 179 foreign nationals, who are expected to be deported after their release.

The amnesty also includes sentence reductions for other prisoners. Several death sentences were commuted to life imprisonment, while some life terms were reduced to shorter jail terms. Additional inmates will also benefit from partial sentence reductions.

This development marks one of several recent mass pardons, following similar releases carried out in late 2025 and early 2026, in line with Myanmar’s long-standing tradition of granting amnesty during national holidays.

However, uncertainty remains over whether political prisoners are among those freed. Since the Myanmar military coup, thousands of individuals have been detained amid ongoing political unrest.

Among the high-profile detainees is Aung San Suu Kyi, who remains imprisoned under multiple convictions.

Myanmar continues to face internal conflict and instability, with the military government stating that the amnesty is part of efforts aimed at promoting national reconciliation and stability.
