A family in Abuja has called for a full investigation and justice after the death of a 24-year-old National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, Abdulsamad Jamiu, who was reportedly shot inside his residence under controversial circumstances.
The incident occurred in the early hours of April 26, 2026, in the Kubwa area of the Federal Capital Territory. Family members alleged that soldiers stormed their compound around 2 a.m. and shot the young corps member in his bedroom.
According to the victim’s sister, she was awakened by gunfire and saw armed men in military uniform inside the house. She claimed she was prevented from checking on her brother immediately and was instead told the soldiers were pursuing suspected criminals in the area. When she eventually gained access to the room, she found him dead from a gunshot wound.
The deceased, a civil engineering graduate of the Federal University of Technology, Minna, was said to be completing his NYSC service year and had aspirations of joining the Nigerian Army.
The Nigerian Army, however, has provided a different account, stating that troops were responding to a distress call about an armed robbery operation and that the corps member was mistakenly caught during an exchange with fleeing suspects.
The family has rejected this explanation, insisting there was no evidence of a shootout within their compound and describing the incident as an unlawful killing.
They are now demanding an independent investigation, accountability for those involved, and justice for the deceased.
The case has continued to draw public attention, with growing calls for transparency in military operations involving civilians.
