Trump Seeks Tougher Prison Sentences for Fraudsters Targeting US Benefit Programmes

United States President Donald Trump has called for tougher prison sentences for individuals who defraud Americans through government programmes, including Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security.

Trump made the call in a video released on Saturday, urging Congress to pass legislation that would introduce mandatory minimum prison sentences for people convicted of fraud involving the programmes.

Under the proposed legislation, offenders would no longer be eligible for probation. Trump said the length of imprisonment would depend on the amount of money stolen, while repeat offenders would face doubled sentences.

“If you steal from the American people, you will go to prison and for a long period of time,” Trump said.

The US President also proposed holding state and local politicians personally responsible when they knowingly fail to act against fraud despite having the authority to stop it.

According to Trump, officials who ignore fraudulent activities could be required to repay the full amount of losses suffered by American taxpayers.

He said the proposed measures were aimed at deterring fraudsters and encouraging public officials to take action against fraud within their jurisdictions.

Trump concluded his message with a warning to those involved in fraudulent activities, saying: “From now on, fraudsters, we’re watching you.”

Medicare and Medicaid provide healthcare coverage to eligible Americans, while Social Security provides benefits such as retirement income.
