United States President Donald Trump has revealed that Google rejected his reported request to rename the Atlantic Ocean after himself or America on Google Maps.
Trump made the disclosure while speaking at a rally in South Carolina on Wednesday, where he recounted a conversation with Google's chief executive officer, Sundar Pichai, about the proposed name change.
According to Trump, he contacted Pichai to ask whether Google could consider renaming the Atlantic Ocean. However, the technology company's CEO reportedly declined the proposal, explaining that oceans are different from smaller geographical features because they span multiple countries.
Trump recalled Pichai telling him that the company would not proceed with the request, adding that he would probably abandon the idea and retain the name Atlantic Ocean.
The proposal follows Trump's previous efforts to change the names of major geographical locations. In January 2025, he signed an executive order directing US federal agencies to use the name Gulf of America instead of Gulf of Mexico.
Google subsequently adopted the new name for users in the United States, while users in Mexico and other regions continued to see the original name. On Google Maps, the platform displays different naming conventions depending on the user's location.
Trump also pursued a similar change involving Lake Ontario amid trade tensions between the United States and Canada. In August 2026, he reportedly signed an executive order directing US federal agencies to refer to the lake as Lake America.
The president has previously suggested renaming other geographical locations, including the Strait of Hormuz, which he jokingly proposed calling the Trump Strait in a social media post last month amid the ongoing US conflict with Iran.
Google had not publicly responded to the Atlantic Ocean proposal at the time of the report. The Guardian said it had contacted the company for comment.
The latest development highlights the challenges technology companies face when responding to government requests involving geographical names that are recognised and used internationally.
