Nobel Medicine Prize Awarded to Three Scientists for Optogenetics Breakthroughs

American scientist Karl Deisseroth and German researchers Peter Hegemann and Georg Nagel have been awarded the 2026 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for their pioneering discoveries in optogenetics, a technique that uses light to control nerve-cell activity.

The Nobel Assembly at Sweden’s Karolinska Institute announced the three winners on Monday, October 5, saying they were honoured “for their discovery of a molecular switch for nerve cells.”

Optogenetics enables scientists to activate or deactivate individual nerve cells in a living brain using light. The technology has transformed neuroscience by helping researchers understand how specific types of brain cells influence behaviours such as learning, fear, addiction and movement.

The Nobel Assembly said the technique has “fundamentally altered our understanding of the brain” and is now being used by laboratories around the world to investigate how the brain functions.

Thomas Perlmann, secretary-general of the Nobel Assembly, said optogenetics allows researchers to control individual nerve cells with unprecedented precision.

“Optogenetics provides opportunities for mapping the brain in a way that we could once only dream of,” said Per Svenningsson, chair of the Nobel Committee.

The discovery could also have future medical applications. Researchers are studying whether optogenetics could improve cochlear implants by allowing more precise stimulation of the auditory nerve than current electrical devices.

Deisseroth, 54, is a professor at Stanford University in the United States. Hegemann, 71, is a neuroscience professor at Humboldt University of Berlin, while Nagel, 73, is a biophysics professor at the University of Würzburg.

The three laureates will share a prize of 12 million Swedish kronor, worth about $1.2 million.

The Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine traditionally opens the annual Nobel announcements. The physics, chemistry, literature, peace and economics prizes are scheduled to follow throughout the week.

The laureates will formally receive their awards on December 10, the anniversary of Alfred Nobel’s death, during ceremonies in Sweden and Norway.
