The Jigawa State Government has recruited 2,020 teachers to address shortages in public primary, junior secondary and senior secondary schools across the state.
Speaking during the presentation of appointment letters at the Government House Banquet Hall in Dutse on Friday, Governor Umar Namadi said the recruitment was part of his administration’s efforts to improve the quality of education in the state.
The governor disclosed that the beneficiaries comprised 1,200 former J-TEACH personnel who had completed the required training and selection process and were being converted to permanent and pensionable staff, while 820 newly recruited teachers would join the J-TEACH programme.
Namadi said the government was particularly concerned about teacher shortages in rural and underserved communities, where schools often have few teachers handling large numbers of pupils and students.
He added that the latest recruitment came about a month after the state distributed school uniforms, bags and writing materials to thousands of learners across Jigawa.
The governor also announced the distribution of 450 bicycles donated by Guaranty Trust Bank to pupils and students who travel long distances to school in hard-to-reach communities.
According to him, the bicycles would help improve school attendance, punctuality and retention by reducing the burden of daily transportation.
Namadi said education remained central to his administration’s development agenda, stressing that investment in classrooms, furniture and instructional materials must be accompanied by qualified teachers.
He further disclosed that since 2023, the J-TEACH programme had brought 7,500 personnel into basic education, with 3,000 later converted to permanent appointments after training and competitive selection.
Earlier, the Commissioner for Higher Education, Prof. Isa Chamo, said the recruitment would reduce pressure in overcrowded classrooms and improve lesson delivery across the state.
Chamo urged the new teachers to remain punctual, disciplined and committed to teaching, while calling for teacher postings and redeployments to be based on verified needs, qualifications, subject specialisation, merit and performance.
He said the initiative was aimed at addressing the shortage of qualified teachers and improving pupil-teacher and student-teacher ratios across Jigawa State.
