Elon Musk Says ‘Instagram Is for Girls’

Elon Musk has renewed his criticism of Instagram, saying the social media platform is “for girls.”

Musk made the comment on October 1, 2026, while responding to a post by Geiger Capital, a venture capital firm that announced it had deleted its Instagram account.

Geiger Capital wrote on X: “Officially deleted Instagram. An inherently female app. Zero benefit.”

In response, Musk simply wrote: “Instagram is for girls.”

The comment triggered reactions on X, with users debating whether Instagram should be associated with a particular gender. Some users criticized Musk’s remarks as reinforcing gender stereotypes, while others defended or joked about his statement.

Musk had made a similar comment in May when discussing social media use. On May 15, he wrote, “Lmao. Instagram is for girls,” before making another remark about men who send him their Instagram profiles.

His latest comment, however, did not include the reference to gender transition contained in his earlier remarks.

Musk has frequently criticized Meta-owned platforms while promoting X, the social media platform he owns. His relationship with Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has also been marked by public rivalry, including disagreements over their respective social media platforms.

Despite describing Instagram as a platform “for girls,” Musk did not provide evidence or an explanation for the claim. Instagram is widely used by people of different genders.
