Venezuela Government and Opposition Agree to Work Towards Supreme Court Reform

Caracas, September 26, 2026 — Venezuela’s interim government and the political opposition have agreed to work towards reforming the country’s Supreme Court of Justice following a second round of political dialogue.

The agreement, announced on Friday, marks the first concrete step towards judicial reforms promised by interim President Delcy Rodriguez.

In a joint statement, both sides said they had established a seven-member committee to review the process for selecting candidates to the Supreme Court. They also agreed to continue examining the laws and regulations required to transform the country’s judicial system.

The government delegation was led by National Assembly President Jorge Rodriguez, while the opposition delegation was headed by Dinorah Figuera, who led the opposition bloc that won Venezuela’s last internationally recognised parliamentary election in 2015.

The talks come as Venezuela’s interim government seeks to introduce political changes following the removal of former President Nicolas Maduro in January.

Delcy Rodriguez has promised that elections will be held, including during her address to the United Nations General Assembly this week, although she did not provide a specific timetable.

US President Donald Trump also said on Friday that he had spoken with Rodriguez about elections during the past week, but he did not provide further details.

The government and opposition previously held their first round of talks in August, where they agreed to pursue judicial reforms and seek the return of Venezuelan assets frozen by the Bank of England.

A further round of political dialogue is scheduled for next month.
